Cumpleaños
Cecilia Casanova & Rebecca Levi

Algunos niños lloraban
con los payasos.
En cambio a ti te gustaba
ver saltar conejitos de los pañuelos
y el ruido de las cornetas
que hacía la fiesta más grande.

Pero cuando entraban al comedor
y había que apagar las velas
de un soplo,
te quedabas atrás,
recordando un velorio
que viste una vez en el campo.

Rebecca composes and performs music that crosses borders, as a soloist and with her Colombia-based band, Debarro. She has been an educator for twelve years, with a focus in early childhood music, children’s orchestra, and creative writing, and her teaching has taken her around the world, from Peru to Venezuela to India.

Birthdays
Cecilia Casanova & Rebecca Levi

Some children cried
at the clowns.
You on the other hand liked
to see rabbits jump out of handkerchiefs
and the noise of the horns
made by the biggest party.

But when they’d all go into the dining room
to blow out the candles
in one breath,
you’d hang back,
remembering a wake
you once saw in the country.
