At five hours old his name has eclipsed
all the language we’d been learning:
ultrasound, breech birth, ventilation.
Watching his eyelids crinkle open,
fist dimpled like a pod of fava beans.
Holding his tiny body, root of a new verb;
holding breath, our conjugation.
